CSAs Bring Fresh Organic Produce Home

By Stephen Bird

Organic Farmers and consumers have created a new and unique form of produce delivery, the CSA.  The CSA, originally known as Community Supported Agriculture, originated when shortages of organic produce left consumers without the garden fresh produce they craved. The beauty of direct marketing is that when consumer and farmer meet face-to-face they can find mutually beneficial solutions.  In this case, the consumers wanted more production from the farmers, because the farmers would often run out and leave their customers dissappointed.  Farmers hesitated bringing more land into production because they feared producing too much produce and being unable to sell it.  Farmers, also, were often short of money making it impossible to expand production even if they wanted to.  The first CSA’s were agreements between consumers and farmers.  The grower agreed to bring enough land into production to assure that the customer would have a full season of fresh produce, if the customer agreed to begin paying for the produce prior to planting. By having the customer begin paying prior to planting, it ensured that the grower would have the capital he needed to bring the land into production.  Word of the success of this system began to spread through the organic farming community, and now CSA’s exist throughout the United States.  The specific agreement varies from CSA to CSA, but the system continues to benefit both farmer and consumer.

The CSA continues to grow in popularity.  In today’s market where most consumers buy produce that travels an average of 1500 miles and can sit in cold storage for up to six months, fresh, local produce is a special treat.  CSA produce not only tastes great, it is more nutritious.  Food that is picked green simply does not have the same nutrients that fully ripe produce does, and only underipe produce can be transported such a long distance.  Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the nutrition, flavor, and health benefits of buying local fully ripe produce.  The CSA is one way to assure your family will continue eating well throughout the season.
